Why odd numbers need byes
A game takes two teams, so with an odd number one team is always left over. The generator adds an empty slot and rotates it like a team. Whoever draws the empty slot has the bye that round. Because the empty slot meets every team once, every team gets exactly one bye.
Questions
How many rounds does a 5 team round robin have?
5 rounds of 2 games, 10 games in all. Each team plays 4 games and has 1 bye.
Can I avoid byes?
Not with an odd number of teams if each team should play each other once. You can fill the bye by adding a placeholder team, such as "Open play", and treating its games as practice.
Are home games balanced with byes?
Yes. With an odd number every team plays an even number of games, and each gets exactly as many home games as away games.
What does the share link contain?
Everything on the schedule: the event name, names of teams or players, dates, times and every round. It sits in the part of the link after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server, so we never see it. Anyone with the link sees the same schedule, even if they have their own saved settings.
